Abdominal Pain
Your abdomen is made up of your thoracic and lumbar spine, your abdominal organs and the abdominal wall. Because there are so many structures with overlapping pain presentations, a workup typically requires a multidisciplinary approach.
Abdominal pain can be felt in the form of aching, burning, stabbing, or cramping in your belly region, specifically between your ribs and pelvis. If it is persistent, you likely have already undergone a specialty evaluation for an underlying medical problem.
In this area, we frequently work closely with Gastroenterologists, OBGYNs, General Surgeons, Oncologists, and Urologists to understand the source of this pain.
Understanding Abdominal Pain
Because of the associated organs and gastrointestinal tract, pain syndromes in this area frequently require treatment of an underlying medical problem. Although we usually assume that this pain is caused by stomach issues, there are a lot of other organs in your abdomen that can cause pain.
Organs in your abdomen that can cause pain
- Liver
- Gallbladder
- Pancreas
- Stomach
- Small intestine
- Large intestine
- Kidneys
However, pain in the abdomen can also originate from the skin and muscles in your abdominal wall. Sometimes even stomach pain may stem from another area of your body, like your chest, pelvis, or back.
If you have completed a medical evaluation or treatment and your pain has not resolved, we may be able to help. Treatments are tailored for each type of pain and we can be very successful when there is a nerve injury, subsequent surgical procedure, or trauma.
